Rimmie continued to practice her flying. Miss Snider worked with her until she proved that she could land safely every time.
Nora and I and several others worked in the fire lab with Nora’s ‘magic’ flames. Nora fed us the flames and directed us while we marched the flames in different circles to make patterns. It is harder than it sounds. Nora demands perfection.
By mid afternoon we’d all had enough. I was the first one to the lake. Many more followed. It was the perfect place to be after spending the rest of the day in the fire lab.
After supper we had a camp fire. Technically, last Saturday’s campfire was the last official one since so many were gone now, but that didn’t stop Nora.
Once she had all of her assistants (seven of us) in place and spinning our groups of flames (six each to begin) the show began. First, Nora manipulated the flames altering their sizes and colors. Then she had some of us change tempo. Then she added independent flames whose positions she controlled.
As assistants, I don’t think we got the full effect of the display, but it still seemed pretty spectacular. There were a lot of oohs and aahs and claps and shouts from the audience.
At the end of the display, all the little flames marched themselves into the campfire. It made one big multi-colored flare, then settled back to ordinary flames. All in all, the whole thing was maybe fifteen minutes, but even in the dark you could see that Nora was totally spent.
We spent the next half hour asking questions about how it was done. Nora didn’t share much. Looking at Miss Booma at the time, I think she wasn’t supposed to say a lot.
