We had a scavenger hunt today for edible plants. Alex gave us each a list and checked that we had accurate pictures in our notebooks. It was fun, but after an entire morning, we barely had enough to make a proper lunch. That was because we had to find ten in order to pick one. I guess that if we were starving, we’d pick more. This way, there were plenty left for the insects, birds and animals living in the area.
It made for an interesting lunch. Most of our ingredients could be eaten raw, and they became a colorful salad. For the things that had to be cooked, we made a little campfire. Those ingredients cooked up into a tasty vegetable stew. Finally, we had some fruits for desert and leaves that were brewed into a tea.
I don’t think I would like to live off the land all the time. It is interesting to know that one could.
